Since we didn't get a new class this semester, our normal Week of the Sphinx was squished into one day called the Day of Domingo. Our SDC, Lauren McDonald, worked very hard planning this event. All of our sisters bundled up on a cold Saturday evening for our local initiation. To make it a special, our graduating seniors walked through as the new members would have.
A huge shoutout to our Sunshine Chair, Sarah Jordan, for planning such a fun sisterhood retreat at the local YMCA. This semesters theme was HAWAIIAN. This night was full of games, smiles and laughs, music, dancing, and of course so many pictures.
Our Fall 2016 Big Little Reveal was an absolute success, with the theme of 'boxes'! Each Big decorated a box that she would later pop out of to see who her little is. Box themes varied from Beyonce to a full on campsite, with eager bigs inside waiting patiently to see who their new wonderful littles were. Congrats to the new Big and Little pairs!!
Hannah Garrett was initiated in the fall of 2015 with the rest of our Psi Class as a freshman. Since initiation Hannah has been a member of standards board and has sat on various committees throughout. She received Sister of the Month for always aiming high and continuously being a great example of who Iota Zeta is. Congrats Hannah from everyone at Iota Zeta!
Formal Recruitment could not have gone better for Iota Zeta, welcoming 59 new members to the Big Leagues! Our Recruitment theme being "A League of Our Own" and bid day being "Welcome to the Big Leagues" it was overall a hit to say the least! Our Membership Recruitment Chair Meghan Hurley and our Continuous Recruitment Chair Kelli Richard really hit it out of the park! Welcome to the big leagues Alpha Alpha Class! We can't wait to see all that you learn and accomplish as new members!
On September 10th the Psi Class put on the Phive-K as their class philanthropy project! The Phive-k went around and through the UMD campus, the top 3 finishers all being from the UMD running club. The overall event went very well, receiving immense support from both the Greek community and everyone in Phi Sig. The event promoted philanthropy, wellness and just a whole lot of fun! Look forward to more events like this in the future from Phi Sigma Sigma!
Amanda was initiated in the Spring of 2014 as a Freshman with the rest of our Upsilon class. Since then, she has been selected to be a Recruitment Captain and was elected to both the Standards board and also was the Membership Recruitment Chair for the 2015 calendar year. During her time as Membership Recruitment Chair she received opportunity to research formal recruiting styles by visiting a chapter in Philadelphia, she describes the experience as: "An amazing experience where I made some great relationships!". Amanda acted as the leison for bringing Phi Sigma Sigma and the Lake Superior Zoo together for one of our most successful events of the year, Zoo La La. This not only raised over $60,000 for a wonderful cause but it allowed Iota Zeta to form lasting relationships with the Duluth community that will impact our chapter for years to come! Overall Amanda has clearly had a very significant impact on our chapter, just as I'm sure she will for her time remaining here at UMD! Congratulations Amanda, we all have loved seeing you grow and watching your ideas turn into reality, there is no one more deserving for the April Sister of the Month than you! :)
Madison Wolf joined Phi Sigma Sigma in the Spring of 2015 and was initiated into the Chi Class as a Freshman. Madison was elected as our chapter's Historian this past fall and will hold this position through the fall semester of 2016. What sets her apart is her overall dedication and passion for the position of Historian, from running around with a Go-Pro to the hours she spends editing the video she takes, Madison is taking her position and absolutely running with it. It has been noticed chapter-wide, Madison is truly revolutionizing her position and setting a president for future contenders that will be hard to match, but her dedication and overall success is something that we've all been in shock and awe about! Congratulations Madison for receiving sister of the month, you have definitely shown your worthiness! :)
On Saturday February 20th 80 of our lovely sisters volunteered 8-12 hours of their time to help with Zoo La La, a Gala that was hosted by Black Woods Group and The Duluth City Zoo with a purpose to raise the funds needed for a new X-Ray machine. The event raised a staggering $60,000 dollars, that's $45,000 more than the Zoo's goal of $15,000! The event was clearly a complete success, with all 80 girls being completely exhausted by the end of the day but the outcome making every minute of work worth it. We are honored to have helped with such a worthy cause, however this event wouldn't have been made possible without the help of Amanda Goodman. Once Amanda heard that this event needed volunteers, she approached our sorority with the idea, put hours of effort into making it come to life, and was a spectacular coordinator of all 80 of us throughout the process. Huge thank-you's to Amanda, Black Woods Group, The Duluth City Zoo, and the 80 wonderful women that helped make this event possible!
On February 20th, the Lake Superior Zoo is teaming up with Blackwoods and Phi Sigma Sigma Iota Zeta to put on Zoo La La, a fundraising gala with an ultimate goal of a new X-ray machine for the animals of the zoo! With the current X-Ray technologies being used by the Zoo being extremely outdated, a new machine is really their main priority to address possible future health concerns for the animals. To raise the funds necessary to purchase this the Zoo needs YOUR help! Register to attend Zoo La La 2016 at the Greysolon Ballroom on Saturday, February 20th to have a delicious dinner, meet some of the animals, and most importantly help the Lake Superior Zoo raise the funds they need to help these animals!
